About the Studio

Bespoke Architectural Metalwork

Handcrafted metalwork carries a timeless quality. Each piece is unique, shaped not only by material, but by the skill and care of the hands that create it.

While tools have evolved, our process remains grounded in traditional techniques. Metal is shaped and formed through heat, precision and experience, guided by a trained eye and a deep understanding of the craft.

This balance of tradition and refinement brings depth, character and individuality to every piece. It is this attention to detail that defines our work.

Who We Are

Who we are

A family tradition. Carried forward.

Wrought Iron Specialists Ltd is based in Auckland, New Zealand, and was established in 2013. The studio is led by Ian, continuing a family tradition of metalwork passed down from his father. Prior to founding the business, Ian worked alongside him for 18 years, developing a deep foundation in the craft.

Originally from Liverpool in the United Kingdom, Ian and Julie now lead the studio in New Zealand, bringing together decades of experience in design, fabrication and finishing. Working alongside a small, highly specialised team, the studio delivers considered, handcrafted architectural metalwork.

The Lineage

Ian’s father Kenny. Ian. Vai – who worked alongside Kenny for over 35 years. Three people carrying the same knowledge forward. That is what you commission when you work with us

The Team

Small, specialized, deeply experienced

Ian — Owner / Director
Ian leads each project from conception through to completion, combining design, fabrication and technical expertise. Having worked alongside his father for 18 years prior to establishing Wrought Iron Specialists, his approach is grounded in both tradition and precision.

Vai — Blacksmith
Vai has been part of the journey from the beginning, and previously worked with Ian’s father for over 35 years. His work is rooted in traditional forging techniques – shaping and forming each piece by hand while contributing to both design and execution.

Julie — Finishing Specialist
Julie is responsible for the final finish of each piece, specialising in colour and surface treatment. From ageing brass to blackening steel – painting and gilding – her work brings depth – richness and refinement to every project.

What We Do

Our Services

If it can be made in metal, we will make it — and we will make it exceptionally well. No commission is too large or too small, and we welcome briefs that others might turn away.

Design & Build

Every piece begins with your idea. Working closely with you, we combine our experience and craft to bring your vision into reality from a small brass lamp to a complex multi-level balustrade. Whatever the scale, the standard never changes.

Restoration & Modification

If you have an old piece that needs restoring to like-new condition, or you wish to modify an existing piece – we can help. We restore using the same traditional methods the original was made with.

Recreations

Seen a piece you fell in love with and want in your own home? We can replicate it. One recent commission was a balcony balustrade photographed in France – recreated in full, capturing the intricacy of the original masters’ craftmanship, and brought into compliance with New Zealand regulations.

Designers, Architects & Artists

We have extensive experience collaborating with interior designers, architects, landscape designers and builders, turning considered briefs into pieces that have featured in award-winning buildings and publications. We have also worked with artists and on motion picture productions, creating bespoke sculptural works and props in wrought iron and bronze.

Custom Order

Don’t see what you’re looking for? Just ask. We pride ourselves on exceptional design, craftsmanship and delivery – and we know your piece will meet and exceed your expectations.
 Handcrafted and Unique Work

Crafted to Endure. Forged for Generations

Each piece is individually crafted, resulting in work that is both distinctive and enduring. Often designed as a focal point, our work sits within both private homes and public spaces – where it is intended to be seen, experienced and appreciated. We invite you to explore a selection of completed work within our portfolio. These images are captured in place, at installation, reflecting each piece as it was made to exist.
